The Sunrise Story

       Sunrise Family Resource Center, Inc. is a non-profit parent/child center whose mission is "Strengthening Families."  We do this by providing educational and support services to families living in Bennington County and surrounding areas.

  Bennington Child Day Care opened in March 1969 “to provide quality care to the children of working mothers.”  By 1984, our services had expanded well beyond their initial mission to include parent support and education services to families as well. Reflecting this growing role we changed our name to Sunrise Family Resource Center.

          Legislation passed in 1986 created Parent Child Centers throughout Vermont to provide a variety of family-centered programs in order to help all families get off to a healthy start. Sunrise was designated as Bennington County’s Parent Child Center. Many of the services offered are available to all families within our communities. Others are tailored to families with particular concerns.

          Over the years Sunrise has expanded, adding educational and support groups, family out-reach programs, community childcare support services, and a range of services to young parents.  Opportunities, an on-site program modeled on Addison County’s successful Learning Together program, provides an alternative education and mentoring experience for teen parents wishing to complete their high school diploma.  

          Sunrise staff work closely with families, other area agencies, schools and groups to provide comprehensive, flexible and individually responsive services.
